Transitions Program
Preparing Students for the Future
Our mission is to support students in graduating from high school, but our commitment to students’ development as learners and individuals means we are equally invested in helping them prepare for life after high school. The Transitions Program is a key resource in keeping students on track for graduation, while also assisting them in planning for careers, post-secondary education, internships, or apprenticeships.
The Transitions Program sets students up for life success through:
Individual case management
Our Transitions Specialists are a key part of each student’s support team, meeting one-on-one with juniors and seniors to help them reach an on-time graduation and develop a plan for life after high school. Transitions Specialists help students get their coursework back on track through Portland Evening and Summer Scholars, credit for work experience, or proficiency packets and testing.
Senior Transitions class
This semester-long course gives students the skills and resources to build their post-secondary plan. By the end of the course, students will complete a personal reflection of their high school experience, a job application portfolio, a resumé, at least two Career-Related Learning Experiences, and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students will also work on interpersonal skills, punctuality, public speaking, financial literacy, budgeting, and other soft and hard skills invaluable to young adult life.
Career Foundations class
We want Mt. Scott alumni to take jobs where they thrive, not just survive. This semester-long course introduces students to career pathways planning before their senior year. The goal of this course is help students take ownership of their career planning, and actively search for careers that meet their interests, skills, and abilities. By the end of the course, students will complete a job application portfolio that includes a personalized resumé, cover letter templates, and employment applications, and conduct practice interviews with individualized feedback.
Personal Growth class
At Mt. Scott we prioritize our students’ social-emotional well-being, and this course gives them the tools to do the same. Students will learn goal-setting, non-violent communication, and healthy relationship techniques, while investigating their relationships to our local and global communities through current events and discussions with local leaders.
Guest speakers, off-campus opportunities, career days, and apprenticeships
By connecting with our community, the Transitions Program introduces students to the wide range of career and educational paths available to them. We partner with local universities, industry leaders, and trades programs so our students can access career advice, hands-on training, mentorships, and apprenticeship opportunities.
Alumni support
Mt. Scott alumni will always be a part of the Mt. Scott family. Our Transitions Specialists are available for recent grads looking for advice and support about college or employment, or who just need a listening ear and someone who knows them. We strive to stay in touch with our alumni so that we can continue celebrating their successes throughout life.
